Crazy Psycho Love: Tate and Violet

Oh, Violet. You are in it now, girl.
She had quite the mind screw this week. Not only did she learn that Tate is dead and a psychotic murderer, but then he had to go and save her life. In case you lost track, that's the second time he's done that. She did not seem pleased to see him in that tub when she came to. (And - did she consider at all that she might end up a ghost trapped in the house if she killed herself? I'm guessing no, but who can say.)

Then, he tearfully confessed his love for her. This poor, jacked up kid. Yeah. I felt bad for him. As I mentioned in my earlier post, the scared ghost boy doesn't seem like the same character as the kid who shot up the school. And Violet clearly sees the distinction too.

Violet had a moment to consider things. She's seeing ghosts. She's pretty sure about that now. And she also knows who Tate is and what he did. She knows he's seriously unwell. But he's made it clear that he's not going to let her die. So her options are to ask him to stay away - which he won't understand because he doesn't know he's a crazy psycho killer - or to help him. When he comes into her room and confesses he loves her, she has to decide: Is this the guy who killed a bunch of innocent teenagers? Or is there someone there worth comforting, worth trying to save. Obviously, she went with the later. And of course, she's the big spoon.

I'm glad for the sake of my entertainment she chose to embrace him. Plus, who knows what he'll do to her if he feels rejected. I hope these two are trapped in this house forever. Because, in case I haven't made it clear yet, they're my favorite part of the show.

  1. I would like to say that you're overdoing the Tate love, but the problem is I am in the exact same situation. Why is Tate so interesting? IDK all I do know is that I have never been more forgiving of a guilty school shooter then I am currently. I almost feel like a bad person. It must be the whole 90s vibe.
Anyway good commentary on this weeks episodes.

  2. They are also my favorite part of the shows and I've been driving myself crazy thinking about this from the last episode. The way he sobbed for her when he saved her, and how he confessed his love broke and wrenched my heart. He's so sincere there is no way it was his fault in his right mind that he killed those kids, the house made him do it. I love Tate, and I love his passion and I hope he won't be crossed over as selfish as that seems, because that would leave Violet alone to the house unprotected as Tate has saved her so many times already.

  4. I just discovered your blog and I'm loving all the Tate/Violet commentary. They MAKE this show for me. I find myself kinda bored with the rest of AHS, waiting for the plot to pick back up with Violet and Tate. Def the 90's vibe of BOTH characters (I mean, how does she get away with wearing those dresses in 2011? I don't care but I love it) makes me miss 1994.

I've been thinking about the whole Tate shooter thing, but I can't make myself feel guilty for liking the kid. The writers have made him too interesting; given his character too much depth to believe he's a heartless killer. Did the house make him do it, like Constance believes? Did the house make her kill her husband? Does the house bring out the killer in people? (Ben does keep trying to burn the place down and Larry warns him that the house is making him want to kill his family). So I'm going with the house is doing it. Plus as sick as a school shooting is, how is it any different from Larry killing Hayden? Or Constance killing MOira? Just because we think it was justified (ie Hayden was annoying and Moira slept with Constance's hubby)? Well *that's* sick. I think it is evidence of the writers' brilliance that they wrote a character we both love and feel bad for. That's real life. And that's really scary - they've made us horrified by our own self.

Anyway great blog. I'll be back for more Tate/Violet commentary!

  5. PS, the acting was phenomenal last night, esp by Evan Peters. If he kept this up, I would say Emmy worthy, but I'm thinking if they decide to honor anyone it will be Jessica Lange, which is also deserved.

  7. Thanks for the comments, everyone! It's awesome to see there are are so many other Tate lovers out there.

Asiah - I love that idea that they've made us horrified at our own sympathies for a character who has done such horrible things. And our sympathy for Tate is what made the school shooting so terrifying.

And lol, LaRon. If only we could all have our own private ghost romances!

  8. I am in love with tate. i have a thing for tortured souls especially ones who wear converse, cool sweaters, have awesome long hair, and like nirvana. ALL i think about is TATE fuck haha i love them together and i think they make the show as well... great acting by everybody very pleased with Evan too. I a m heart broken that he is dead becasue him and violet are perfect for each other. This episode my me cry my eyes out. Having to watch tate die like that, and then watching him save violet, then watching him cry to her... how much do they expect an 18 year old girl like me to take?!?!? haha I LOVE THIS SHOW AND YOUR BLOG

  9. To respond to the latest anon about it being sad that Tate is dead - There have been several theories that Violet herself is dead, that either Vivien killed her and Ben when she found Ben cheating, or that Violet was never alive (Vivien does have a history of miscarriage). But I think Violet is probably alive.

However, right now Tate doesn't know he is dead, he think's he's alive, thus his "don't you die on me Violet!" He thinks that if Violet dies, he will lose her, but we know that isn't true, because if Vi dies in the house she will be stuck there forever. With him. So what happens when Tate realizes he is dead, and that he's stuck there(assuming Constance & Billie are wrong and he can't cross over, which I lean towards since the gay couple's bodies were removed from the house but they are still stuck there)? I think have'll stop saving Violet's life, and start encouraging her suicidal side. I read an interview with Ryan Murphy that they are the show's Romeo and Juliet. Well, if I remember correctly, they both die in the end. I think he was perhaps alluding to that maybe. Because as you said in the blog, it would be lame if Tate passes over. Plus he is one of the general cast, so hopefully that won't happen.

  10. Great blog, here in Sweden where I live the show has'nt started airing yet so the blogospere ain't exactly much to talk about.

Just wondering, you have any take on that Mena Suvari and what-his-face-can't-remember-his-name are going to star att a couple och maybe as siblings in episode 8? It is the episode where were supposed to find out who RM is.

  11. All I know about the Mena Suvari casting is that she's supposed to be playing The Black Dahlia. I assume they mean The REAL Black Dahlia and they're not commandeering the nick-name for some new thing. So...maybe it'll be a new twist on what might have happened to the real girl? I mean, the way they showed the Sal Mineo murder had nothing to do with the house. So maybe it won't even be connected...

I don't know! But I'm definitely curious to find out.

  13. Brilliant acting by Evan Peters, Tate broke my heart with his large teary eyes and confessing his love for Violet. So relieved that she didn't reject him. I just wanted to give him a big hug!
Still would've liked to join him in that tub though... ; )

  14. the whole Bathtub scene i literally burst into tears watching...my first and only true love and i had this sort of angsty relationship, it was so similar (minus the ghost parts lol) and it was pure love, and pure torture. Good luck to them. Romeo and Juliet were doomed. I hope they are somehow, not. But what could it be? Sunshine & rainbows? THink about it. SIGH.

  15. They're the only reason I watch too. I mean I like the whole show but Tate is my favorite. He has such an interesting story line. I really want to know why he shot up the school in the first place, hopefully he never crosses over.

  16. just a thought... what if Violet really died?

  17. Obviously I am a bit late for commenting on this blog. However, I think Tate's character is well written. I just have a hard time seeing past his actions. He shot up a school and then killed himself in his own room. He slept with Violet while raping her Mom and then finally admitted everything he did at the end of the series hoping that would 'clear the air' between him and Ben. He has a demeanor that should've been more, but he chose a lot of terrible decisions. I guess in the end, he got what he deserved. He's stuck in a house with a girl he loves but she doesn't want him....

  18. Tate and Violet were the only reason I watched the show too. Does anybody think that she eventually forgave him in the end?

    1. I think she would have forgiven him.

    2. I don't think there really is another way. Time heals all wounds and they sure aren't short of it. Also he really was getting better as we saw when he couldn't just easily kill the skateboard guy. Maybe she'll see that. And finally, like she said, she's drawn to darkness and he is the darkness.
