Gone But Not Forgotten: Angel in Buffy Episode "Surprise"

Oh, man. Here we go.

David Boreanaz as Angel staked by Dru Buffy the Vampire Slayer Surprise
Remember that time in high school you thought you found THE ONE and so you decided to give it up only to later discover that sleeping with him broke the gypsy curse that kept his soul in his body and thus you're single-handedly responsible for the fact that he's returned to being an evil, murderous, demon? Yeah. That happened to me too.

Look at those giant hands, oh so tenderly cupping her cheek. Who wouldn't trust that guy?

You'd think after being cursed for a few decades, Angel would have learned all he could about it. In fact, I think the first thing I'd research is if it were possible to somehow accidentally reverse the curse.

Angel's Claddagh Ring Buffy the Vampire Slayer Surprise
This was also the episode that was responsible for about a thousand claddagh rings suddenly appearing on the fingers of middle-school girls everywhere. All of whom pretended they totally knew what claddagh rings were before Buffy.

Look. The ring is so cool, Buffy would rather make out with IT than Angel. Who wouldn't want to hook up with a guy who gave you a ring with the speech "My people, before I was changed, they exchanged this as a sign of devotion. It's a claddagh ring. The hands represent friendship, the crown represents loyalty, and the heart... Well, you know. Wear it with the heart pointing towards you. It means you belong to somebody." Really, on second thought, it's not the best speech ever. But it's the sentiment that counts, right?

And there he goes, Angel is bye-bye and we're in for 9 episodes of Angelus (Can you believe it was only 9? It felt like more at the time...)

It's been a while since I've watched the Angelus episodes - but from what I remember, he wasn't incredibly angsty in that time. He was pretty damn pleased about being evil. Sure, happy creepy David Boreanaz was incredibly hot, but I think there's only one episode in that span I'm going to cover. Any guesses?

  1. Oh please let it be the Sadie Hawkins ghost one!

I found my Buffy VHS tapes the other night, shame we got rid of the VHS years ago!

I'm so glad I grew up with Buffy (boyfriend goes evil - kills boyfriend) instead of Bella (boyfriend dumps her - jumps off a cliff)!
