With finales flying at us left and right, I feel it's time to catch up on some characters I didn't have a chance to talk about during their actual seasons. To kick off my summer catch up: Switched at Birth.
Oh he's so young. I have to admit, I feel like I've got a toe in the land of creepster by talking about Emmett. But Sean Berdy is almost 19 which is almost 21 which is officially the age at which I stop feeling like a creepster. So I could wait three years to post this post but that seems silly. So... yeah. Age is just a number, am I right people?!

When Switched at Birth begins, Emmet's not all that angsty. He cool. He's confident. He's charming. Apparently they were going for "Deaf James Dean" which... does that strike anyone else as an odd thing to say? Have we really not found another social icon for rebellion in the past sixty years?

The only angsty thing about him is that he's in love with his BFF Daphne and she doesn't share his amorous feelings. So he watches from afar as she effortlessly transitions to the hearing world with her new family and a whole community of people that Emmett's never really had to deal with before.

In one of his first angsty moments, a girl comes running up to him after his rockin' performance on the drums. She prattles on and on about how great he was but of course, prattling makes for difficult lip reading. When he tells her he's deaf, her awkwardness takes over and she shouts her apologies as she runs off.

Btw - do people really shout at deaf people? That's an element played over and over on Switched At Birth and I find it odd. I think most people can grasp the concept of deaf. It's just like the way people on television shout at people who don't speak their language. Personally, I've never seen that happen in real life. But whatever.
