Once Upon A Time Season One Finale: The Definition of Closure

Once Upon A Time wrapped up this past Sunday and I was a bit surprised by the gargantuan leap forward it took. Not only did Emma realize the curse was real - which was the plot development I expected - but she used love's kiss to re-awaken the entire town. They all remember themselves now. How nutzo is that?! On top of that, they brought back pretty much every character that I personally care about. It was like a hit parade of angsty story-lines past. And most of them had their angstiest issues put to rest. Which... weird, right?

Prince Charming started off  the night in a cage. Dudes in cages is always fun.

It didn't last long, though. He got out of the cage and escaped the castle with help from Jamie Dornan! Was it a shocking way to bring him back? Eh - not so much. But when Charming shouted "Who the hell are you?" and The Huntsman ripped off his helmut while Jamie Dornan's credit simultaneously appeared on screen - that was fun timing.

He said some stuff about Snow White and The Queen and fate being precarious, but I think Charming was thrown off by the accent.

I have no idea what you're saying. Is that English?

Then Charming meets Rumpel in the forest and, shock-of-shocks, Rumpel wants to make a deal.

Let's just all agree that if we ever find ourselves in Fairytale Land, we'll avoid all parlays with those who have sparkling, golden skin.

And dear Jefferson. Sans guy-liner! WTF? Is his angst so near conclusion that he doesn't even bother putting his makeup on anymore? He has a staring contest with Regina who, again, screws him over. Rule number two for that trip to Fairytale Land we're planning, no deals with Evil Queens. If "evil" is literally in someone's title, let's just avoid having a relationship with them all together.

THEN! More angst. August turns into wood. Simple. Efficient. Later, my man.

Then we visit the weird Cuckoo's Nest basement where it really does seem to be 1962. What's with that? Why is that basement in the past? Why is Chief Bromden down there?

Whatever. Jefferson looks hot in scrubs. He delivers his awesome Terminator line (Come with me if you want to live) and gives Belle the instructions she needs to hookup with Mr. Gold.

Back in Fairytale Land, things are a regular Disney happily-ever-after.

And Mr. Gold reunites with Belle. That was certainly a happy ending I wasn't expecting for quite some time. He's shocked to see her, and then promises to protect her. Frankly, I sort of hoped there'd be a bit more of a build to this moment. But for whatever reason, they really wanted them reunited NOW.

Then, Emma kisses Henry and a big tidal wave of twu-love magic goes whooshing over the town, returning everyone's memories to them. Yep. Everyone knows the truth now. David and Mary Margaret return to being Charming and Snow and share one of the least sexy kisses ever. Look at his lips! It's like he's sucking glass.

And Belle remembers that she's Belle and in love with Rumpel. They hug. Because if Josh Dallas and Ginnifer Goodwin can't pull off a sexy kiss, there's little hope for Robert Carlyle and Emilie De Ravin. Especially when she's wearing the coat of a nine year old.

Then a big purple fog envelops the town and I guess it's bad the end.

I definitely feel like OUAT took a different approach in terms of finale-ing. They wrapped up some things that felt like they'd been set up to be series long arcs and introduced a gigantic new element with so little context, it's difficult to even know what to be curious about. I don't think the purple fog will slaughter everyone, although that would kick off season two in a different way. And I'm hoping it doesn't erase everyone's memory because I really don't want season two to be a repeat of season one. Which leaves a third, ambiguous, magic exists now in reality sort of thing. Which... ok? I don't know what that means. I don't know what that might mean. So I feel a little adrift in terms of what to wonder about.

Bottom line? I want more Jefferson. So long for now, Once Upon A Time. Catch you on the flip.

  1. I was surprised at how many loose ends they wrapped up as well (it was quite satisfying though).

I really did not think they were going to get anywhere near breaking the curse in the first season. Its quite brave I suppose, I guess they're hoping the purple/magic in our world thing is enough of a hook.

I was kinda looking forward to more Gold/Belle build up as well. There would have been angst aplenty in Mr. Gold remembering but Belle not. I suppose now we'll have Mr. Gold becoming power/magic mad and proving himself the same as before and breaking Belle's heart again? ANGST.

Jefferson does look hot in scrubs though. I think Sebastian Stan should do more shows where he wears uniforms. I feel that's a direction his career should take.
