The Newsroom Season One Finale: Goodbye For Now, Jim and Maggie

The Newsroom wrapped up its season last night and I'm SO glad there's going to be a season two because nothing nothing nothing had closure.

Early in the episode, Jim learns that Don is planning to ask Maggie to move in with him. Jim's attempt at jovial support was delightfully awkward and charming. But more on THAT scene in a moment. Jim later mentions to Mackenzie that he sorta kinda gathered the wrong rosebud. I love that Mackenzie is so forthcoming with her feelings about Jim and Maggie. Someone needs to actually say what the entire audience is thinking: that Jim and Maggie are clearly the made-for-each-other couple. And it may as well be Mack.

But Jim is too polite and perhaps a little too cowardly to break up with Lisa and go after Maggie while she's still hanging on to Don's coattails. So Jim continues on, trying to take an interest in Lisa by learning about Sex and the City. Before discussing the coinci-shock of Jim popping up on that bus - I have to say - I loved Maggie's speech.

"And I know Carrie must have made boatloads writing her 800 word column for a newspaper no one's ever heard of, but I just spent my last seven dollars having a fight with my best friend who by the way is not available at 3:00pm on a Wednesday to console me about some guy because she too has a job." You go, Maggie. Speak your mind, girl!

But... she also happens to mention during this little rant that she's fallen for a guy who's going out with her best friend.  Of course, then Jim pops up and it's totally Embarrassment in the City.

But he chases her down. And when he finds her, before they have a chance to speak, they finally finally kiss! Yawww!

But. Because everyone is dating other people and everyone is too weak and polite and chicken to acknowledge the couple who's really Meant To Be, they break apart. Jim knows that Don's planning to take that commitment step with the moving-in-thing. Maggie doesn't.

And Jim asks Maggie - what if Don HAD committed to you? Then what? And what Maggie SHOULD say is: Screw Don. I don't care if he buys me a house with a white picket fence and puppy with an engagement ring on his collar. I want you you you! But instead, she says things would be different if Don had committed.

Sigh. Wrong answer, Mags. Because he has. You just don't know it yet.

Jim lets her go. And shortly thereafter, Don proposes cohabitation. And Maggie accepts. As a side note, I also really loved Maggie drafting her speech to Don. As a person who spends twenty minutes composing a 140 character tweet, that's definitely something I can relate to.

Jim calls Maggie a little white later. And Maggie hits the ignore button. :'(

Back at the ranch, Jim and Maggie have a moment of yeah. This is what happened. It sucks. But here we are. See you in season two.

But! Rewind to that moment in the beginning when Jim found out that Don was going to ask Maggie to move in. I was totally joking last week when I said I shipped Don and Sloan. I hadn't felt any emotional connection to either of them throughout the duration of the season. And as the two age appropriate people left in The Newsroom who I didn't want with anyone else - sure. It made sense.

But now I'm officially on board the ship. And it's pretty much entirely thanks to Sloan's line, "I don't know who told you you're a bad guy, but somebody did. Somebody along the way. Somebody or something convinced you of it because you think you're a bad guy and you're just not."

Whoa! Truth bombs from Sloan! What?!

And then she also mentions she wishes he had asked her out at some point. That helps too. But mostly I dig the lady seeing through the psychology of the guy. That's hot. And honesty is awesome. And honesty is something Don and Maggie seem to have zero of.

So. Sloan and Don. Make it happen.

Season one has come and gone and none of the right couples ended up together. But it's okay because we're already assured of a season two. Hopefully next year, the tangle of relationships will untangle a bit and maybe someone will pop up who Lisa should actually be with. Or maybe Lisa will disappear. But either way, Jim and Maggie Forever!! See you next year.

  1. Maggie is the kind of "best friend" you warn your daughter about. Absolutely no sense of loyalty whatsoever and loyalty is the only thing that matters with a friend. The instant she knew that Jim had slept with Lisa, her "best friend," Maggie should have put Jim totally off limits for herself.

Both Jim and Maggie are coming off as douchebags.

  2. Hmm - it's like you missed the whole Maggie liked Jim first thing. Lisa was the disloyal one.

I gather you're one of the many people who hate-watches this show. Not something I've ever understood, personally.
