Angst Initiate: Dexter

So. If you're not a Dexter watcher but you someday wish to be a Dexter watcher, be gone with you! This is your one and only warning because I'm about to go all season seven on your ass.

Like, holy hell! Deb. Knows. Everything.

I've never talked about Dexter on The Angst Report partly because I'm such a huge fan, I wanted to do a whole series of posts going back to season one and covering all the ups and downs from family deaths to love interests. (I know I'm in the minority, but I loved the Lumen storyline.) However, I obviously haven't quite gotten around to this epic series of Dexter posts. So screw it. I'm jumping in with season seven.

Deb freaking found out everything. She finally put on her detective hat and did some damn detecting - locating Dexter's stash of blood slides, knives, and one prosthetic prostitute hand. And Dexter's just like yep. You got me.

Of course, Deb's world is royally rocked when Dexter tells her it was daddy dearest who taught him to be such a proficient and efficient killer. It's a great scene. The whole scene is set up like an interrogation - I mean check out that lamp, right? Dexter tells her how long, what sort of people, and even that he calls it his dark passenger. Deb is pissed, confused, shocked - basically just totally mind fucked. As I suspect one would be.

To her credit (I guess? Yay, moral ambiguity!) Deb doesn't arrest Dexter. Rather, she insists that there's good in him and that Harry made a bad call. Her angst-ridden plan du jour is serial killer rehabilitaton. Sweet. Dexter tried rehab once before - but it got tangled up in the Lila debacle of 2007. This time though, he gets to be honest. He gets to pour his guts out and there's someone there who can try and help him be less crazy. Frankly, as much as I dig a good incest storyline, I wasn't in love with the Deb-loves-Dexter thing that was happening at the end of season six so I'm pleased with this shift in their relationship.

The serial killer rehab starts right away with Deb serving a plate of bloody pasta. Seriously, it was the most unnaturally red tomato sauce ever. Deb lays down a few rules which Dexter translates into his new code. Hey, code makers. I have a bright idea. Let's make #1 of the code DO NOT KILL. Dexter really likes rules - maybe the solution was so simple, you never even thought of it!

Dexter also has a delightfully creepy monologue in which he explains what it feels like to need to kill. If it were reality, hopefully that would really freak me out. But in TV land, I just wanted to jump into the screen, hug Dexter, and tell him he wasn't a monster - he's perfect just the way he is.

Deb doesn't quite react that way. She makes Dexter swear to call her if he starts "seeing red." Best line of the night? Dexter asks what he should say when he calls. Deb's response: "Say, I really feel like wrapping someone up in plastic and stabbing them and I can say, no, Dexter, don't."

Oddly enough, Dexter does get the urge to wrap someone up in plastic and stab them. And he DOES call Deb. That might be the biggest surprise of the night. It's also a really angsty scene in which Dexter basically says there's no hope for me, arrest me, I'm a monster. But - as all devotees of angsty television know - the first step toward recovery is admitting you have a problem. Dexter's legitimately going to try to change. And Deb is going to be his sponsor.

The show ends on a total bummer note - dashing Dexter's hopes by spraying him with the bloody message that being on lockdown can't actually fix a person. The only way out is the permanent one. Sigh. Poor Dexter. So screwed up and unaware of his own goodness. I hope the Deb plan succeeds at least for a little while. Even though it's much creepier when Dexter smiles than it is when he stabs someone.
